Remember Who You Are
This has come up again and again when working with clients – and it did again in the last couple of weeks.
Do You Remember Who You Are?
We are so busy doing busy-ness in the world, so busy doing what we think other people want us to Be. (And for sure, sometimes those other people really do want us to be a certain thing – and they make that clear in subtle and not-so-subtle ways).
We forget who we are – who we want us to BE.
I asked a client:
“Who would you be if you didn’t have to be anything for anyone else”
And the answers were not a surprise to her – she knows the parts of herself that she has closed down in order to gain the approval of friends, family, colleagues. And she knows too, that some of those people she doesn’t even like or respect – so why was she worried about their approval? Well, that’s another whole story – but for now – have the courage to ask yourself:
Who do I BE?
And am I being that person for ME or am I being that person for someone else or to gain something?
Notice I ask Who do I BE - not what do I DO - explore the difference, for example I might BE creative and what I DO is ...(fill in your blank, paint, dance, sing ...). I might BE spiritual and how I DO that is ....
Write your list and explore the parts of you that you have closed down – for whatever reason – and explore what you can DO to reintroduce those parts of you to your life and what you would gain from doing this.
This takes courage – it really does!
